Linux is a operating system with a difference. It runs virtually on every computer you can think of, from the standard Pc to Apple hardware to the more exotic systems like RISC processors.

Unlike Mac OS X and Windows Linux is completely free to use. You can download the OS from the Internet and burn it on to a CD or DVD and install it.

Linux was invented, if you want to call it like that, by Linus Thorvalds. He based his Linux on another freeware OS called UNIX. To this day he works for the Linux Foundation. Linus is originally from Finland and has since moved to the US with his family to be closer to the head quarters of the Linux Foundation where he still works on the core of the operating system.

After you installed Linux on your computer you will have to give in some of your information. Once you are done you will see your desktop like you would see in Windows or Mac.

Everything that you can do on any other PC you can do in Linux. However, Linux uses everything in its system based on open source software. Meaning that everything is for free and also everybody that can program is allowed to make changes to the program; so that much less bugs will be in the OS and the programs that run on it. Every time something changes it will be uploaded to the Internet and of course checked, and then you can install it on your Linux. It is just like in windows or Mac with the automatic updates. While the major companies only release those updates once a month every new update on Linux will be available to download immediately.

The big companies do however not make any software for Linux. So lets say Microsoft office will never be available for the Linux computer. This is because they do see Linux as a major rival to there systems. For MS office you have the Open office suite available to you that does everything MS office does and better. The only thing that is not included in Open office is Outlook but you can use the Email client that comes with Linux for that. It has the Exchange plug-in already installed.

There is a ton of freeware on the internet and included with your Linux distribution.
