GNU for you

In 1984 by Richard Stallman, the GNU operating system was released with the hopes that users would gain more freedom in using their software. This means that the users would have the freedom to run the programs, study how they worked and change it if needed, and redistribute both the original and modified versions. This is the dream of the GNU operating system.

In order to make changes to the "free software," GNU has a GNU Public License for the majority of software that they have in their libraries. The license is available in multiple formats such as HTML, plain text, ODF, Docbook, Texinfo, and LaTeK. This assures that any type of user, of any software editing ability, will be able to make the changes that they want to the software in order for it to meet their individualized needs.

GNU, jokingly, stands for GNU's Not Unix. It is a Unix-compatible system, but does not want to be mistaken for it. Instead, GNU wants to fill in the blanks of what it believes that Unix was lacking. Thus, making it more easily adaptable to computers that already operate on Unix. GNU wanted its users to know that they were getting the best adaptation of an operating system out there.

However, there is a system that was developed by the GNU Project that most people are using today in businesses across the world. This system, surprisingly, is Linux. Most users not only do not realize that Linux is GNU-based, but also have never heard GNU, period. And yet, without the influence of certain GNU freedoms, Linux may have not ended up a free product in 1992.

GNU is an operating system that wants nothing more than to add the freedom to change and distribute software to users. This company revolutionized the way users look at their software and operating systems. Without GNU, today, we would be lacking in many of our software "freedoms" and have to work extra hard to create the imaginable. It is this way of thinking that paved the way for others to think freely about what is possible in the software world.

GNU, Scherz, steht für GNU's Not Unix.
